The importance of addressing affective measures as key educational outcomes, not just cognitive measures in national standards
The science education standards in most western countries, which typically aim to promote scientific literacy for all, focus almost entirely on determining the scientific knowledge and skills necessary for scientific literacy, with little, if any, reference to the emotional characteristics that need to be cultivated at the same time. In this lecture I will explain why the emotional characteristics have a decisive influence in the development of scientific literacy and what is required for someone to develop a tendency for lifelong learning in the sciences. I will do this by examining the assumptions underlying most standards documents.
Prof. David Fortus is the incumbent of the Chief Justice Bora Laskin Chair in Science Teaching at the Weizmann Institute of Science. His main research interests are teaching cross-disciplinary subjects (such as energy and socio-scientific subjects) and the relations between different affective characteristics and science studies. He worked previously worked as a project manager in the aerospace industry and a physics teacher. He was one of the founders and directors of the Zomer High School in Ramat Gan, Israel. For several years he chaired the Israeli national committee responsible for the high stakes middle school test in science.
